PHYLLIS MARIE BOWDWIN is a Bronx-born artist, activist, jeweler, writer, troublemaker, story slam winner and storyteller for The Moth’s Main-Stage. A former teacher trainer and life skills educator for the NYC Department of Education, curriculum developer for the New York State Education Department, crisis-intervention counselor for the Marble Collegiate Church, and Coordinator of Daytime Casting at ABC, Phyllis was a panelist on the UN’s 2013 Pre-Commission on the Elimination and Prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls. Her Middle Passage Maafa brooch was featured in the New York Times, exhibited at the New York Historical Society and is in the permanent collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian National Design Museum. Phyllis was a BRIO Award winner for literature in 2013. Her stories have been published in The Moth’s anthology:Occasional Magic, the Bronx Memoir Project, the United Federation of Teachers Reflections Magazine, The Black Star News and The Independent Newspaper.
