Research has shown that climate change disproportionately impacts Black, Indigenous and people of color. In New York, and the Bronx in particular, as the land changes and development rises, there are increasingly scarce food sources, shrinking green spaces, and a lack of support for people living and creating within their communities. Artists are often able to tap into the world around them in order to give light to current lived experiences, and/or illuminate the way to new possibilities. ‘Seeding Our Futures’ addressed the intersections of sustainability, social justice and art-making. This conversation provided an examination of working at the intersection of arts and climate change and engagement with climate change through artistic practices.

Jamie Martinez is the publisher of Arte Fuse, and the founder and director of The Border Project Space, which was recently featured in Hyperallergic’s top 15 shows of 2018.
Karen Washington is a community gardener and board member of the New York Botanical Gardens, and worked with Bronx neighborhoods to turn empty lots into community gardens since 1985.
