The New Works Project is a comprehensive play development program under the auspices of the Performing Arts Department of the Riverdale YM-YWHA. The Project will continue and expand the successful Playwrights Lab. Bronx playwrights meet weekly in a moderated workshop format to present new works-in-progress for critique. With the support of actors from the community, guest directors, and the moderator, writers hear their work for the first time, receive expert feedback, and form a clear plan for revision. The Lab will choose up to four works that are ready for deeper exploration with actors and director, and present these works in a rehearsed reading format, open to the public. Included will be an audience talkback with playwright, cast and director, and a written survey to let audience members share their opinions more fully and reflect on the experience of not only witnessing, but participating in the development of new plays. The Lab will culminate in a public showing of excerpts from our works-in-progress at the Riverdale Y, including an audience talkback with the writers. The Lab will choose up to four works that are ready for deeper exploration with actors and director, and present these works in a rehearsed reading format, open to the public.
