Ira has been a native Bronx resident for 73 years. He retired from teaching photography after 33 years, with the last 24 being at the High School of Art & Design in Manhattan. Before teaching, he worked as a freelance photographer associate at the Dena Photography Agency in the late 1970s and early 1980s and as a videographer for the Health and Nursing Program at Lehman College in The Bronx. In 2016, Ira was a photographer for the Bronx Artist Documentary Project.
