This project, a reading series in partnership with the Spuyten Duyvil NYPL, will present different writers of color once a month. Their work will engage the audience in essential conversations about race, gender, class issues in our world, their work will challenge our imaginations, engage our empathy and spark conversation and ideas for a better, more true city. My hope is that by presenting writers of color to people of color and residents of the Bronx, I can inspire them to greater purpose and change, greater hope and collaboration. I chose to have the reading series in Riverdale because many people of color who live in the Bronx never visit Riverdale. I know there is an opportunity here to present writers of color to people of color in a part of the Bronx they rarely interact with. I know change can only begin when we engage in small steps not yet taken.
