Bronx Memoir Project Presents: Memoir in Verse (HYBRID)

In this free hybrid creative writing workshop, led by Advocate of Wordz, participants will focus on developing the writer's voice through prose and poetry. Participants will engage in a variety of writing activities that will support them in developing their unique voices using both forms initially and then their preferred form. A focal point of the workshop is for participants to expand their understanding of poetry from an emotional expression to a form of storytelling. Participants will select one piece of writing to develop and revise throughout the four-week workshop.

Writers of all experience levels are welcome. By the end of the four sessions, participants should have a draft ready for submission and editing. Participants of the Bronx Memoir Project Workshop Series are eligible to submit their memoirs for consideration in the next Anthology. Click here to purchase last year's Anthology.

Workshop Schedule

Session I – Introduction to Narrative Poetry - Tuesday, October 17th from 5:00 - 7:00 PM
Participants will be introduced to “narrative” as a poetic form; an introduction to poetry and storytelling.

Session II – Elements of Storytelling - Tuesday, October 24th from 5:00 - 7:00 PM
In this workshop, participants will learn/review M.I.C.E. (milieu, inquiry, character, event) and work independently to implement these writing tools.

Session III – Characters in Conflict – Tuesday, October 31st from 5:00 - 7:00 PM
Explore working with poetic form and the elements of the story. Participants will revise their pieces to layer in rich conflict for their characters.

Session VI – Storytelling - Tuesday, November 7th from 5:00 - 7:00 PM
This workshop will give participants an opportunity to share a piece of writing for audience feedback; participants will set goals for their writing.
