Dall'ombre is a newly-formed chamber ensemble comprised of seven classically-trained women musicians. Our name translates to "From the Shadows" in Italian, which encapsulates our mission: to search out and perform music by composers, who have been historically marginalized, suppressed, and underrepresented, whether due to political oppression or systemic racism of their time. We feel that their music must be heard, because it offers a multi-layered view of the times in which they lived, outside of the standard narrative of history as it is presently described. As a group of women, we are committed to offering audiences a new and updated perspective on classical music. We strive to create an inclusive atmosphere that eliminates the artificial separation between the audience and performers; we challenge this historically-elite view. At our performances, we take time to engage audiences by sharing the life stories of each composer we perform, the personal inspirations they felt as they composed each piece, and the historical circumstances (possibly adverse) that influenced their work. Thus, we make the music and the lives of these underrepresented composers engaging and more meaningful to audience members.
