BCA's Summer Concert Series has been a tradition over the past couple years. We're excited to bring back our annual concert series to the public online with BRIO Winner and Community Arts Grantee, Tyrone Birkett. Get ready to snap and groove to jazz music!

About Tyrone Birkett

Tyrone Birkett is a saxophonist, composer, and speaker partnering art and social action. the musical director of the band Tyrone Birkett Emancipation, he has created Postmodern Spirituals. A re-imagining of the Negro Spiritual placed in a contemporary context, it is an artistic form purposed to bring the hope and resilience of the freedom song into the 21st century. This project has supported work by Anna Deavere Smith and author Nikki Giovanni. Performances of his work have been presented at the Apollo Theater, WNYC/Greene Space, Drew University, Schomburg Center for Black Culture, Blue Note Jazz Club, and Storm King Arts Center. He is a two-time B.R.I.O. award winner and has been awarded a NYSCA Composer Commission among other grants and awards.
