Percussion instruments accompany South Africa’s familiar Siyahamba; Kenyan (Luo) Hombe thrums with a hunting hyena, and French/Swahili Amani demands we “sing strongly for peace for the world.” Yiddish folksong Tumbalalaika celebrates courting, while Hebrew Ose Shalom contemplates The One Who Makes Peace. Jamaica’s Harry Belafonte invites us to “Turn the World Around.”
Celtic harp warms the duet My Gentle Harp, and solos in the Welsh “Dafyyd y Garren Wen”. African-American Spirituals Deep River and I’ve Been in the Storm So Long recall the pain of losses now and over 400 years. Chilean Violetta Parra’s “Gracias a la Vida” joyfully bursts with Thanksgiving for all her life experiences. Ariel Ramirez’s Gloria from “Missa Criolla” celebrates the LORD’s greatness.
Notably, “A Ukrainian Prayer,” is John Rutter’s 2022 tribute to Ukrainians. Composer Brian Muni’s “Pieces of the World” caps the concert: he is expected to perform with us.
