In this interactive performance and conversation, the audience is invited to to discuss the history of Black hair in the United States, the fibers of hair within the field of artmaking, and reflect on creative imaginations for where the collective Black hair journey is taking us toward liberatory transformation. This event echos themes within Black Shedding(s), an exhibition that brings the audience through various processes of a shedding transformation. Through a shedding process that most Black people have been forced to move through, it becomes evident to attribute one's hair journey to that process.
During the discussion, exhibiting artist tasha dougé’s performance allows attendees to witness the production of the second edition of Justice, a sculpture made with braiding hair. She shares, "I specifically chose kinky hair because Black hair is undeniable and easily recognizable.”
