Artist Sustainability Workshop Series: Community Engagement using Winning Commissions at Public Art Spaces

Community Board 12

Learn how to maneuver through the proposal process, make choices for the subject and pre-execution of the work, learn how to procure materials, obtain work permits, and handle contract negotiations. Learn more about the levels of interaction with public administrators, community organizations, and municipal agencies. The goal is to explore ways on how the artists’ work can enhance their engagement with a certain community to improve its aesthetic quality and strengthen its social connections.

Special Guest: Stephen Pierson

Stephen Pierson is the executive director of ArtBridge, a nonprofit that empowers local artists to transform outdoor spaces. ArtBridge works in all five boroughs, and has partnered with Bronx artists and community groups to paint four Bronx stepstreets.  Recently, ArtBridge was selected by NYC’s Department of Cultural Affairs to implement City Canvas — a pilot program that enables ArtBridge to turn the city’s 300 miles of construction fencing into large-scale art exhibitions.
