The Bronx Times: October 9, 2018 Bronx Recognizes Its Own (BRIO) provides direct support to individual Bronx artists who create works in the literary, media, visual, and performing arts.
BCA awards grants of $4,000 to Bronx artists each year, based solely on artistic excellence. Winners complete a one-time public service activity known as Artists for Community Enrichment (ACE), an essential component required of all BRIO recipients to be completed within a year of receiving the award. ACE provides artists with additional visibility and demonstrates to the community the wealth of artistic talent available in our borough.
Since its inception in 1989, BRIO has provided more than $1,197,000. to 399 artists. The selection of the awardees are based solely on the artistic excellence of the work submitted and judged anonymously by a panel of art professionals (different panelists each year) from outside the Bronx and working in each respective field. Over the years, BRIO has grown from ten annual awards of $1500 to over 25 annual awards of $4,000. Bronx has the unique distinction of being the only borough in New York City to have an ongoing award of this kind for artists.
