What Do You See? Teachings on Visual Literacy by Decoding Images

Photographer Chris Lopez, of the non for profit photography organization Aperture, will lead participants in learning how to connect images through an open dialogue that share similar elements in both simple and abstract ways. Images from the Apeture photo book will be projected, with questions asked to participants regarding their thoughts on the photos. The shared ideas will be pooled to come to a certain conclusion on what the images are trying to convey, with students learning new photographic terms that I will mark down on the board for later use. Each student will be given their own camera and asked to select three of the photo vocabulary words we noted, then take three photos per word that successfully depicts the word. Students will learn camera care and basic camera functions, how to make connections between images, build a story arc using images and speak about images with a new vocabulary.

The Art of One-Piece Paper Sculpture

with Guy Gonzalez

Master Ben A. Gonzales (1925-2011), in the course of his life experience as an artist/educator, expertly developed techniques introducing 3-Dimensional Design to children, teenagers, and adults; anyone, with or without art ability. Thus he created Global Gupit-Gupit , the elegant art of one-piece paper sculpture. With basic tools and a simple piece of paper, Gupit-Gupit (which means ‘cut-cut’ in the Tagalog language of the Philippines) is a unique Oriental art form that excludes no one, and allows everyone to be resourceful and imaginative.  Immediately inspiring creativity, Global Gupit-Gupit allows the student to access unlimited potential with the completion and display of each project.

PLANET MANGA!

ROBOTS, MONSTER AND HEROES, join cartoonist Ivan Velez as he teaches kids how to make new worlds! Focusing on Japanese style comics (Manga), the students learn the nuts and bolts of this very popular form of comics, and make connections to their own experiences and cultures as they create their own characters for their own comics. They pick a genre, a target audience and a socially relevant theme (i.e social justice or environmentalism), and then create CHIBIs (childlike characters with large heads and little bodies) with a dynamic story-line! This is usually followed by a short critique and Quiz contest for prizes!
