LITERARY ARTS FELLOWSHIP AND RESIDENCY
Guidelines and Requirements

Two nine-month fellowships are awarded annually to fiction writers, poets, playwrights, and screenwriters who reside in the Bronx. A $5,000 award is given, and a residency at the Bronx Writers' Center is required as part of the fellowship's community service component. Applications must be received by 5 pm on Friday, June 15, 2007.  There is no entry fee.

Eligibility
Literary artists who reside in the Bronx, and are not enrolled as full-time students in an undergraduate or graduate program are eligible to apply. Recipients of the 2007 BRIO are not eligible for this award.

Criteria
The selection of awards is based solely on artistic excellence - the quality of work submitted - and decided by a panel of professional writers. All materials and information involved in the selection process are kept confidential and manuscripts are reviewed anonymously.

Manuscript Submission Guidelines
All eligible applicants must submit four (4) copies of a representative body of work to display professional accomplishment and their commitment to a literary career. Applicants should submit work created no earlier than 2002. Older material will not be considered. An English translation must accompany any work submitted in another language. Fiction writers, playwrights, and screenwriters should submit no more than twenty pages, double spaced, and a synopsis (approx 250 words) to accompany each manuscript copy. Poets should submit no more than ten pages, single spaced.  Applicant’s name should not appear on manuscript or synopsis. MANUSCRIPTS NOT MEETING THESE GUIDELINES WILL RENDER THE APPLICATION INELIGIBLE.  Submissions will not be returned; they will be recycled after panels convene.

Other Application Guidelines
Applicants must include proof of Bronx residency with their application. A photocopy of any two of the following are considered acceptable: recent driver’s license or state issued I.D., utility bill (phone, gas, electricity), rent receipt or lease agreement, New York State or Federal tax return. An original Bursar’s receipt is required for part-time students. Applicants must also submit a resume or CV and fill out an application form.

Requirements of Fellowship and Residency
With the assistance of Writers’ Center staff, Fellows will plan and complete a public service activity to benefit the Bronx writing community during residency.  Public service may include providing manuscript review for other writers, and/or teaching a short Master Class writing workshop. Fellows will also submit a writing sample of work done during residency to the Bronx Council on the Arts, to be published online at bronxarts.org. Term of residency is from October 2007 through end of June 2008.
