Based at New Settlement in the Southwest Bronx, PROJECT V.I.P. (Voice, Identity, Power) encourages girls aged 10-15 to express themselves and uncover their strengths through theatre and dramatic writing, while deepening their knowledge of poetry and literature and building collaboration skills. The program combines formal performing arts training (improvisation, physical and vocal work, stagecraft) with the development of original creative work based on themes encountered in literature. By analyzing each written work and drawing connections to their own experience, participants gain a better understanding of the artistic process, explore the relationship between art and social justice, and develop the confidence to creatively express their own points of view. Project V.I.P. offers three sessions annually, in spring, summer and fall, and each ensemble performs their work for friends, family and community members.

Peggy Robles - Alvarado

Funded for: Robleswrites Presents: The Abuela Stories Project

Location: SEE BELOW

Project Summary
Grandmother, Nana, Mamá- no matter how we describe them, Abuelas play a pivotal role in our identity through chancletazos, gentle hugs, or vivid memories. The Abuela Stories Project, presented by Robleswrites Productions, intends to highlight the essence of Abuelas, their guidance, distinctive personalities, and detriments through original works of poetry, prose, and photography. Award winning poet Peggy Robles- Alvarado created this project after becoming an Abuela in her thirties and as an act of creative rebellion against those who found little value in stories about these modern day matriarchs. Seeking to depict Abuelas and their evolving roles within present day parameters, Peggy partnered with Bronx based visual artist and photographer Daisy Arroyo who captured Abuelas as artists, dancers, and rebels redefining themselves.  Her images serve as inspiration for a group of intergenerational female writers to create passionate and sometimes painful original works of Abuelas and the lives they've touched.
