Sol’Sax was born Trevor Jemal Holtham in Kings County Hospital In 1969, it was the same hospital his Mother was born in by her Geechee parents from South Carolina. His Father had Jamaican and Cuban parents and emigrated from Jamaica. Sol’Sax received a BFA from Cooper Union in 1992 and a MFA from Yale School of Art in 1995 both with honors in sculpture. Since 1991 Sol'Sax has been developing an American ancestral masquerade based on The West African ancestral masquerade called Egungun. Sol’Sax’s masqueraders are called “Sol’Sain’t” to celebrate the souls that ain’t here no more but live on in the cultural contributions they made in the resistance of European supremacist beliefs. Sol’Sax is a NYFA and a Guggenheim Fellow. Sol’Sax’s work has been included in exhibits at The Brooklyn Museum, The Bronx Museum and PS1 MoMA. Sol'Sax left Brooklyn to live and work in the Bronx in 2018.
